HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC
Under management supervision, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic will demonstrate, at a minimum, journeyman level capabilities by being able to operate and inspect various types of combat vehicles, tactical vehicles, non-tactical vehicles and heavy construction equipment in order to perform troubleshooting actions and diagnose defects; examine parts for damage or excessive wear; repair or replace parts as required; service, repair, rebuild, overhaul and maintain the aforementioned types of equipment, as well as major assemblies and components of that equipment including engines, transmissions, fuel injection systems, hydraulic systems, ignition systems and electrical systems.
MAJOR JOB ACTIVITIES:
1. Performs the full range of overhaul, repair, service and troubleshooting of electronic, hydraulic and mechanical systems of combat, tactical, non-tactical vehicles, equipment and heavy construction equipment at the Intermediate Direct Support (IDS) and Intermediate General Support (IGS) levels of maintenance.
2. Maintains current on state of the art principals, practices and procedures to be employed. Quantity and quality of work expected and tools and materials to be used.
3. Ensures work is complete and conforms to standards and requirements IAW technical manuals and local SOPs.
4. Performs initial, inline and final inspections on jobs.
5. Assures that equipment and supplies are utilized properly.
6. Performs other duties as assigned.
MATERIAL & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:
Diagnostic and test equipment consisting of TMDE, technical manuals – to include Electronic Technical Manuals (ETM’s), lifting devices – including bridge cranes, material handling equipment, hand tools, micrometers, gauges, and any other equipment required to properly troubleshoot equipment faults.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
Must be able to lift/push/pull 50 lbs. Work will require stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and working with or in areas where a potential could exist for exposure to physical, chemical or biological agents. Employee use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required is certain areas. Such PPE includes but is not limited to head, foot, hand, torso, respiratory, vision and hearing protective devices. Must comply with OSHA, EPA, Fire Regulations and published Company work rules. Work is generally conducted in a shop environment, however duties may involve the conduct of work in the out-of-doors area with a potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions.
Education: High School graduate or equivalent. Training in equipment maintenance and management procedures at the sustainment level of maintenance.
Experience: Three years’ experience in equipment maintenance at the journeyman level.
Licensing: Must have and maintain a valid state driver’s license throughout employment. Class A or B CDL is preferred for the operation of all vehicles that meet the state licensing requirements.
Clearance: Background check and drug screening will be administered. Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) or a Secret security clearance if required by the terms and conditions of the contract. Candidate must also be able to obtain and maintain all clearances, credentials and passes required to have unescorted access on a U. S. military installation.
